Regions in Papua New Guinea

Regions in Papua New Guinea

The country can be conveniently divided into 11 regions (7 on the main island and 4 island regions):
  • Bougainville — an autonomous island region, culturally and geographically more akin to the Solomon Islands
  • Highlands — consist of Enga Province, Chimbu Province and the Southern, Western and Eastern Highlands, amazing culture and the rare tribal fight
  • Huon Gulf — Morobe province, beginning of the Highlands Highway and the original Gold Rush area
  • Madang (region) — volcanic islands and good diving
  • Manus — remote island area
  • Milne Bay — the eastern region. Many fascinating islands
  • New Britain — still many visible ruins from WW2, above and below water.
  • New Ireland — land of the country's first human settlements. Fishing, diving, sailing and surfing, plus interesting culture.
  • Central and North — covers the National Capital District of Port Moresby and the Central and Northern provinces. Starting point for all visits to Papua New Guinea
  • Sepik — the Sandaun (West Sepik) and East Sepik provinces and the mighty Sepik river
  • South-western provinces — the Western and Gulf provinces. Fascinating but little visited provinces. Birdwatchers' paradise
