Somaliland Attractions & Activities - The Best Holiday Destinations for 2020
Somaliland (Somali: Soomaaliland, Arabic: صوماللاند Ṣūmāliland) is an autonomous region in northwestern Somalia. Although the government is trying to establish a modicum of safety there, visiting is still not advised by the governments of the US, UK, Canada, and New Zealand.
The local Somaliland authorities declared the region's independence from the rest of Somalia in May 1991, but neither the Somali federal government nor any other country or international organization has recognized its sovereignty.
With that said, the area is viewed as safer than most of its neighboring East African countries. The local government is very anxious to show its stability and, as a result, foreigners are generally treated with respect and interest. However, high unemployment and increasing discontent at being an unrecognized island of stability in a grim region does cause some resentment towards outsiders, particularly NGO workers. For travelers exercising caution and respect, Somaliland is a fascinating and safe place to visit.
