Chalkis or Halkida (Χαλκίδα) is the capital of the island, a lively city of more than 50.000 citizens. The city has mainly an urban look and is not really touristic (except its coastline area). More tourist-oriented spots include Aedipsos (Αιδηψός), famous for its natural spas and hot springs and Karystos (Κάρυστος) in the south.
