Flora and Fauna in Lake Nakuru National Park
You can see around 400 species of birds in Lake Nakuru National Park, including more than one million flamingos. On most days you can also see rhinos, zebras, giraffes, impalas, antelopes, hyenas, water buffalo, waterbucks, baboons, and several species of monkeys. If you are fortunate, you might also see lions and leopards. The park’s Rothschild giraffes are of particular interest. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considers the subspecies to be endangered and potentially close to meeting the population threshold for being designated as “critically endangered.” In mid-2010 the park contained more than 70 Rothschild giraffes, one of the largest concentrations in Africa. There are no elephants in the park.
