Uppsala by train

Uppsala by train

If you're already in Sweden, the most likely way for you to get to Uppsala is by train. Uppsala's Central Station is located right downtown, and is currently undergoing a large (and time-wise lengthy) expansion. SJ, the national rail service, operates dedicated hourly trains from Stockholm and also less frequent trains to other cities such as Västerås and Sundsvall, with some (minor) discounts for youth and students. Further, all trains coming or going from the North of Sweden (Norrland and Dalarna) from Stockholm also stop in Uppsala. Thus, at rush hour, there are trains connecting Stockholm and Uppsala every 15-20 minutes or so. For the vast majority of travelers coming from Southern Sweden, a change of trains in Stockholm is required. Tickets from Stockholm usually cost 72 SEK one-way (69 SEK if you are under 25 or a student) if bought in the train-station. Use the blue machines (not the silver ones) in both Stockholm and Uppsala if you want to travel within the next hour between the two cities - after buying such a ticket, you may use it for any regional or inter-city service between the cities (and NOT for X2000 services). UL also operates a commuter train known as Upptåget which connects Uppsala with Gävle in the north and Upplands Väsby in the south, where you can connect to Stockholm commuter trains. Veolia and Tågkompaniet also serve the station irregularly, on services going to Northern Sweden.
