Mitaka attractions

  • Ghibli Museum - Mitaka is home to the famed animator Hayao Miyazaki's "Mitaka Ghibli Forest Museum." It has permanent exhibitions showing the history and science of animation, as well as a mock-up animation studio showing the animation process. There are also special exhibitions, a cinema showing animated short films, a store, a rooftop garden and a restaurant. Locals "must" make a ticket reservation one month in advance. However, if you play the "foreign visitor" routine, and the session is not booked out (try mid-week), you can purchase a ticket on the day from the Lawson Station convenience store across the road. Currently tickets are ¥1000, less for children. You can walk there in 15 minutes from Kitchijoji Station (along the front of the park), or a bus is available from Mitaka Station for ¥300 round-trip.
  • Mitaka City Gallery of Art - The gallery is in the topmost floor of the Coral building, immediately adjacent to Mitaka station. Features special exhibits four times a year. Hours are 10:00-20:00 (admission ends at 19:30). Their address is CORAL 5F, 3-35-1 Shimorenjaku, Mitaka-shi, and they can be contacted at 0422-79-0033.
