Chandigarh is the capital city of Punjab. Chandigarh serves not only as the Capital of Punjab, but also the mainly Hindi speaking state of Haryana which was formerly part of Punjab as well. Chandigarh however administratively is not under the jurisdiction of either state, it is administered by the Central government and hence classified as a union territory. Punjab comprises 20 administrative districts, which regionally fall into three main parts:
  • Majha ? border area with Pakistan.An area between the rivers Ravi and Beas which consists of 3 districts of Gurdaspur,Amritsar,Tarn Taran.
  • Doaba ? area that lies between Beas River and Satluj River. Consists of Jalandhar,Kapurthala,Hoshiarpur and Nawanshahr districts.
  • Malwa ? southern part of the state.It roughly spans from between Sutlej river and river Ghaggar which flows along Haryana-Punjab border.It is the largest region of Punjab in terms of area and has the 13 districts in it , largest of which are Ferozepur,Ludhaiana,Patiala,Bathinda.
