Southend travel safety advice
Southend is relatively safe for tourists, but you should avoid wandering off the beaten track as there are some nasty areas out there. As with anywhere, walking alone at night should be done with great caution. Although the suburb Shoeburyness is mainly a small residential area, it does contain housing estates, many are run down and look nearly derelict. Avoid these in the evening, the most well known housing estate is at The Renown in Shoeburyness and is very dodgy at night when yobs hang around in gangs and do graffiti, take drugs, get drunk and rowdy and steal things from cars (although this is rare). But these housing estates are away from the tourist areas and there should be no need for a tourist to visit these areas. Like housing estates in Shoeburyness, parks should avoided in the evening, especially Syene Park in Rayleigh, which has been well known for gangs to steal mobile phones, take drugs and mug people in late evening, but also tend to steal mobile phones in broad daylight. If you see a gang of yobs who look like they're up to no good and just want to bother you, go around them by walking down another road instead.
