Towns are listed in an west-east order.
  • Hveragerði - located in a geothermal area, this town is known for its greenhouse agriculture. Often overlooked as just a small satellite town between Reykjavík and Selfoss, it has attractions of its own such as the beautiful valleys just above town.
  • Eyrarbakki - beautiful old village on the south coast, formerly an important trading post by the estuary of Ölfusá. Also worth visiting are nearby Stokkseyri and Þorlákshöfn.
  • Selfoss - the largest town in the south. Located by the scenic river Ölfusá, Selfoss is a good base for exploring the western part of the region.
  • Hella and Hvolsvöllur - two nearby villages in the agricultural heartland of western South Iceland, good bases for exploring further inland, and close to some important sites in the Sagas.
  • Vestmannaeyjar is the name for both a town and an archipelago just south of Iceland. The town itself is located on the only permanently inhabited island, Heimaey, about 7 km off the south coast, and can be reached by ferry or by air. Heimaey experienced an eruption in 1973 which covered a large part of the town. It has since long recovered and the bare lava is a beautiful sight. Also in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago is Surtsey, an island created in an eruption that started in 1963 and lasted until 1967.
  • Vík - a coastal village world famous for its puffins, black sand beaches, impressive basalt columns and strange rock formations in the ocean. There is a variety of services in town for the visitor, including restaurants and guesthouses.
  • Kirkjubæjarklaustur - a village in the sparsely populated Skaftárhreppur, in the eastern part of South Iceland. In the vicinity are some incredible natural phenomena including one of the largest lava fields in Iceland and Lakagígar, the location of a 18th century eruption which was one of the most fatal in Icelandic history and created an ash cloud that reached both Europe and North America.
